Arboricultural Shade Plans
We can also use your tree survey data to produce Shadow Plans, and offer a couple of options:
The Basic Shadow Constraint
This gives an approximate sweep of shade cast by trees in midsummer, plotted as per description in BS5837: 2012:
“An indication of potential direct obstruction of sunlight can be illustrated by plotting a segment, with a radius from the centre of the stem equal to the height of the tree, drawn from due north-west to due east, indicating the shadow pattern through the main part of the day.”
We can add these to your BS:5837 plan. It is quick to draw, very affordable, and is often applied to a whole site, and then used by architects as a design tool.
Arbor-Shadow Plotting
This uses the excellent software developed by Chris Skellern. We would use this to produce a series of plans showing what shade would look like at various times of the day and year.
